Air Source Heat Pumps
More and more homeowners are turning to Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) systems as a low-carbon, energy-efficient alternative to traditional gas or oil heating—helping to reduce both environmental impact and energy bills.
An Air Source Heat Pump extracts heat from the outside air—even in sub-zero temperatures—and transfers it into your home to provide heating and hot water. It operates via a vapour-compression refrigeration cycle, similar to that used in air conditioning systems, and can also be reversed to provide cooling during warmer months.
At Mark Smith Plumbing & Heating, we are fully accredited installers of both Grant and Daikin Air Source Heat Pumps. We hold G1 accreditation with Grant, and we are certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)—a nationally recognised quality assurance scheme that ensures low-carbon energy technologies are installed to the highest industry standards.
Because we are MCS accredited, we can also administer the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) on your behalf. This government-backed scheme offers a £7,500 grant towards the installation of an air source heat pump, helping to significantly reduce the upfront cost.
Am I Eligible for the £7,500 BUS Grant?
To qualify for the BUS grant, your property must meet the following criteria:
- You must own the property (domestic or small non-domestic) in England or Wales.
- The system must replace an existing fossil fuel heating system (such as oil, gas, or LPG). New-build homes are generally not eligible, unless you are building your own home (self-build).
- The installation must be carried out by an MCS certified installer—like us.
- Your property must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), issued within the last 10 years, with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation (unless exempt).
These systems are designed for year-round performance, operating efficiently at temperatures as low as –20°C. With low operating noise levels, they can be installed discreetly in outdoor spaces—even in areas with noise restrictions.
By switching from fossil fuels to renewable air-based heating, you can reduce your home’s carbon emissions by up to 50% and significantly lower your energy bills. While heat pumps require a small amount of electricity to operate, the energy they deliver far exceeds what they consume.
