The main role of a hot water cylinder is to store water and it to be heated with either an immersion or a coil.  Most of the time an indirect hot water cylinder will be heated by a coil with an immersion heater as a backup.  A direct hot water cylinder would be heated exclusively by immersion heaters.  Most cylinders are made from stainless steel but copper hot water cylinders are also popular.
